Inguinal hernia repair without mesh
Your hernia is repaired with your own tissue, and nothing synthetic is implanted. You are met at the station or airport, looked after in a hotel, and operated on in a private hospital. I have performed the Desarda technique since 2005.
Surgery includes the operation, pre-operative tests, the anaesthetist's consultation and the first night in hospital. Both sides: ask me for a quote.
In the Desarda repair, a strip of the patient's own external oblique aponeurosis (a flat tendon sheet of the abdominal wall) is left attached at one end, turned down and sutured to reinforce the back wall of the inguinal canal. The weak area is closed with living tissue that keeps moving with the abdominal wall.
The operation is open, not laparoscopic. No mesh is implanted, so there is no foreign material to become a source of long-term discomfort. Most primary inguinal hernias can be treated this way, including hernias on both sides in one operation. Whether the method suits your hernia is decided at consultation, after examination and a review of your scans.
More information about potential dangers of mesh implantation is on my website przepuklinabezsiatki.pl. It is in Polish and opens automatically translated: open in English (Deutsch).
Surgery takes place in a private, comfortable hospital in the Bydgoszcz area (Szpital Eskulap, Osielsko). If you travel from abroad, the practical side is organised for you.
Please arrive two days before surgery. Blood group determination takes two days, and the operation cannot be scheduled until it is complete.
Arrival and transfer to the hotelOne blood sample after arrival covers the blood group (determination takes two days) and all other blood tests.
Tests at the hospitalChest X-ray and ECG. The anaesthetist's consultation takes place the same day.
Surgery at the private hospitalOvernight stay for observation.
Discharge and transfer back to the hotelTravel home when you and I agree you are ready.
Exact timing depends on the operating day and on your results. I confirm the full plan with you when you book.
Szpital Eskulap is a modern private hospital on the edge of Bydgoszcz, in Osielsko. You are operated on in calm, uncrowded surroundings, not in a large public hospital: bright air-conditioned patient rooms, private bathrooms with step-free showers, a spacious reception, and advanced Siemens imaging on site, including MRI and a digital angiography suite.
You can travel by car, train or plane. Details will follow in our correspondence, once I know where you are travelling from.
Szopinski J, Dabrowiecki S, Pierscinski S, Jackowski M, Jaworski M, Szuflet Z. Desarda versus Lichtenstein technique for primary inguinal hernia treatment: 3-year results of a randomized clinical trial. World J Surg 2012;36:984–992. One of the first randomised comparisons of the two techniques, in 208 male patients. doi:10.1007/s00268-012-1508-1
The trial compared the Desarda repair with the Lichtenstein repair, the most widely used open mesh technique and long regarded as the gold standard of open inguinal hernia surgery. At 3-year follow-up the two gave comparable results: recurrence (two cases in each group), chronic pain, foreign body sensation and return to everyday activity did not differ. Collections of tissue fluid under the wound (seroma) were significantly less frequent after the Desarda repair.
I am in personal contact with Dr Mohan Desarda, who developed the technique, and I am listed on his website among the surgeons advising or using the Desarda technique.
The reviews are written in Polish. Read them automatically translated.
Send me a short description of your hernia (one or both sides, how long you have had it) and any scan or ultrasound report you already have. I will reply with whether the Desarda repair is suitable, the available dates and the cost of the full package.
A video consultation on WhatsApp comes first. Before you travel, we hold a short video call. On the basis of that consultation I decide which tests you need and set the date of the operation.
